Old, White Fence Wood!!

So... we've been wanting to make a headboard for our bed out of some old weathered wood.... but we didn't have access to much of the good stuff. We actually got some newer wood, and we were going to cheat and make our own "weathered" wood by beating it up, then staining it. We had all the supplies and everything... THEN right before we started, I told a friend about the look we were trying to create and she took me to a junk pile she had access to. Someone had just torn down an old white fence!!! It was perfect.

We came home from the junk pile with enough wood to build our headboard, and still have some left over to make signs and other fun stuff to hang around the house!

These are the pieces we chose for this particular project. They were pretty dirty, so we had to hose them off and scrub them to get the dirt off. This process took longer then my patience wanted to allow because it's the colder season and it took a day or two for the wood to dry.

Once we got this all cleaned up we nailed them all to some supporting wood so they could stand up behind the bed. Then... we let them dry a little longer!

Once it was completely dry, we took it upstairs and installed it!

Halloween Craft

Halloween is just around the corner, so we thought it was the perfect time to get crafty. We want to dress up here at work, but don't really like a lot of the Halloween shirts that are out there. After a little bit of brainstorming, Pinterest-ing, and fabric shopping, here's what we came up with!
We decided to sew a pumpkin onto a sweatshirt. First, we found a black crew neck sweatshirt at Wal Mart. (We ended up cutting the neck so the sweatshirt drapes off the shoulder, but we didn't get a picture of that). And found the fabric we wanted to use on the pumpkin.
Next, we cut out 3 ovals for the pumpkin, a stem, and a leaf.
Then we laid everything out on the sweatshirt just how we wanted it, and pinned it... a lot!!
And finally we sewed everything into place using a zig zag stitch in coordinating threads!

This project was so fun and easy... we definitely recommend making a Halloween sweatshirt of your own!

Our trip to Texas!

Last week Chelsey and I were so lucky to be able to go to Texas and visit my sister and her family and her new GRANDBABIES! Both of her daughters had their first baby over the summer... a boy, Isaac, born in June, and a girl, Ellie, born just a few weeks ago in August! We have been eagerly waiting to meet these precious babies for what seems like FOREVER!! Meanwhile... we've been baby crafting away! One of our favorite projects were these cozy blankets which we embroidered their stats on! Makes for a fun keepsake as well :) Take a look!

Here is Isaac
Here is Ellie

Re Purposed Jeans

So Chelsey went to the thrift store.
Purchased a pair of higher waisted jeans.
Cut them.
Took the pockets off, covered them in lace and sewed them back on.

She then added lace to the bottom of the shorts.

The lace is one of many projects that Chelsey has made from a lace tablecloth purchased at a thrift stpre.

A fun way to re purpose.

OH MY! :(

It is so very important to get your sewing machine in and have it serviced.
Doing the bobbin area is great!
Machines need to be professionally serviced every couple of years. More often for quilters due to how the fabrics "shed".
When we service a machine we take all the outer covers off and clean and lubricate top to bottom.
This machine had obviously been cleaned by the sewer where she could reach, it looked great in the bobbin area. BUT this revealed why it "sounded funny".
Poor little machine! I would sound funny too.
Mention this blog and receive a ten percent off discount on your machine service.

Using My Ruffler

I was inspired by our class on the ruffler!
                                                          I love this attachment!

I hemmed a rectangle of burlap.
Used my ruffler for gathering. It takes the stress out of breaking the threads halfway down your long piece of ruffle. And...

                                                           Voila! A new table runner!

Baby Lock Training in Fullerton, CA

So.... This past Tuesday we headed to a Baby Lock training down in Fullerton, CA. We actually have some cousins who live nearby, so we made it a fun, long weekend. By the time the training rolled around, we didn't really know what to expect from an 8 hour class.... but to our surprise it was awesome! The first half of the class was hands-on training on the Baby Lock Evolution serger. Oh my goodness, that machine is amazing! It's actually 2 machines in one... a serger and a cover stitch. After playing with it a bit, we realized that you can actually serge with such ease!!! And the best part.................. it has an air threading system! Now that's what I call a serger! Come in, take a look, and have some fun playing with the Baby Lock Evolution serger!!

The pictures above are just a few from the training. The first one is the Baby Lock Evolution, the second one is how they set us all up in the warehouse for this class, the third is down an isle of the Tacony warehouse (which is where we receive Baby Locks from), and the fourth one is my daughter Chelsey and I.
